SUMMER 2024 - Open Water Swimming

Dates: Wednesdays, July 3rd to August 28th 2024

Morning : 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

KITSILANO BEACH, VANCOUVER

LOCATION: Kits Beach (in front on The Boathouse Restaurant near Tennis Courts)

Please join Brite Coaching for a summer of Open Water Swim Training designed for both triathletes and fitness enthusiasts to improve and hone their open water swim skills.

Coached by: Brite Coach McKenzie Summers and Karen Thibodeau will lead you through a summer of incredible OW learnings and fitness development. Guest swim experts will join us periodically to further support an in-depth analysis of stroke mechanisms, sighting, race strategies and open water proficiency.

Wetsuits, Cap & Goggles are mandatory. Each session will offer technical skill development coupled with specific OW workout formats to ensure each athlete is getting both swim fit and OW swim savvy.

Coaching will be provided from both the use of a paddle board and In water support. This combination will optimize our ability to provide feedback as well as demonstrate skills and technique. Allow us to help you discover your inner swimmer this summer:)


VANCOUVER Swim Program Details:

  • 9-Week Program - $265pp

  • WEDNESDAYS : July 3rd to August 28th. TIMES : 6:45a.m. - 7:45a.m.

  • Please meet promptly 15min prior to the session time begins

  • Safety talk, beach conditions, educational tips, workout description.

  • Wetsuits, Cap & Goggles are mandatory. We recommend glide due to the salt water.

  • Swim circuits begin with mass group segmented into 4-5 sub-groups based on ability.

YOU WILL RECEIVE:

  • Coached and supervised open water swim training with warm up instructions.

  • Training in skills required for open water coupled with specific interval sessions that really help you develop as a fit and strong swimmer.

  • Education revolving around all topics related to OW swimming for triathlon or general fitness.

Summer Swim Focus:

Week #1 - Intros & comfort. Comfort in the open water is speed.

Introductions to coach and participants. Open water swimming basic safety and equipment. Swimming in difference open conditions. Focus on comfort in open water, breathing, and sighting.

Week #2 - Technique, OW Drills & Swim Mechanics.

Focus on open water swimming technique. Introduction to drills/swimming mechanics/ technique. Endurance building workout

Week #3 - Group swimming, drafting, surging and holding speed in OW.

Focus on drafting, surging, group swimming. Swimmers will also do an endurance based workout that incorporates drills with individualized technique feedback.

Week #4 - Endurance. Build your swim engine.

Focus on longer intervals, sighting and sustaining long efforts in OW.

Week #5 - Race Simulation. Group Coffee Social Post Swim!

Swimmers will time trial a distance swim of 2km or 3km to test swim efficiency and threshold fitness.

Week #6 & 7 - Technique & Short Intervals.

For two weeks, swimming will focus on short fast intervals to boost arm turnover and add kick power as an added motor. Expect some challenging efforts to boost your aerobic capacity in the OW.

Week #8 - Pace Lines & Sighting . Race Simulation

Swimmers will team up based on compatibility and work together in pace lines making the speed faster together. Sighting will be important to incorporate to either be a good leader or stay on someone’s feet! Swimmers will time trial a distance swim of 2km or 3km to test swim efficiency and threshold fitness. Compare times from Week 5!

Week #9 - Pulling it all together…a good training session, sighting, intervals and using your newfound comfort as power in the water.
