THE TRAINING RELATIONSHIP
Every so often I am reminded by feedback, training comments or simply observing an athlete doing the work, paying attention to recovery, sending in feedback, embracing the fitness process, sharing the journey with friends, remaining accountable to a coach or finding joy in the suffering about how important the "training relationship" is on a much greater scale than simply workouts and Strava likes.
The training relationship is profound and, if nurtured, a conduit to a better quality of life. In order for a healthy relationship to evolve, training needs a few requirements. It must:
offer some flexibility
progress in challenge & be fun
allow for adequate stress & rest
demand accountability
connect us to others or a process
have variety & repeatability
be purposeful & offer routine
lead us somewhere special
When the training relationship formula works, the outcomes can have a ripple up effect on all areas of our lives including:
how we feed ourselves
how we manage movement
how we value sleep quality
how we socialize
how we pivot away from demons
how we show up for family, friends & work peers
As we always ask, where are you at with your training relationship? Are you levelling up in sport and other areas in your life or is it taking over? If you are struggling with your training relationship or if you are seeking more out of your training experience, reach out to us. Sometimes we just need a plan and a coach. Sometimes we need to zoom out and understand how all the pieces fit together. When training integrates into our lives, we level up and no one need be left behind.
