SUMMER 2016

"David's Spanish Spanks"

Lead Coach: David eurotune Gerth (aka: Daves of Thunder)

Wednesdays @ 6:00p.m.

Whether you are a roadie, triathlete or mountain biker, these Monday evening sessions will help you develop confidence on your bike. Under the watchful trained eyes of top cycling coaches, riders will work on bike handling, pace setting, climbing and power development. When combining the new skills and robust energy systems, riders will hit their races or weekend rides with a huge sense of confidence and horsepower. No matter how sleek your bike is or how fit you think you are, training side by side with experienced coaches and other athletes at your level or higher, will take you to places you never thought possible on a bike.

Sessions will be lead by David Gerth (hence "David's Spanish Spanks"), pro rider with Langoix Brown Racing and veteran in the sport of cycling (bio below). David coached Brite indoor rides all season wowing riders with his visualizations, race simulations, pacing strategies and awesome sense of humor.  Now he gets to take you for a ride! Dave will be joined by at least 1 or 2 other top coaches, including his wife Jennifer Gerth (bio below), to help lead the workouts and ensure everyone gets a first hand experience.

Look forward the following three types of intervals:

Sasamat to Museum of Anthropology (MOA)

This is a 10-12 minute effort that will involve riding low in the drops, or on your TT bars, climbing while standing, and seated climbing. These will be sustained efforts at strong but controlled power outputs. Strava segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/3394274

Spanish Bank Hill

This classic climb is a 3-5 minutes effort, mostly seated with a 45 second standing section near the beginning to establish momentum. Riders will repeat this until they have nailed it! Strava segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/4305974

Tolmie-Belmont-Blanca

Here’s where you will develop real power. This is a 2-3 minute power climb, 75% standing, very steep and demanding.  This climb will make any other hill seem flat. Starve segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/1655525

Coach Dave Gerth

From his days racing as a Cat 1 and on Louis Garneau's team, Garneau Evolution, to completing the Tour of America's Dairyland, to riding as a team leader on Langlois Brown Racing, David has competed in more than 400 races. In short, he knows his way around a peloton.

Among his favorite accolades within his 12-year race history are winning the Race the Ridge (2013), racing Superweek (6 different times!), and taking 3rd at the 2014 Whistler Gran Fondo (with several other wins at smaller, local races peppered in for good measure).

David took to his aero bars in 2003 and, despite “sucking at swimming and running,” ventured into the world of triathlon. He continues to race the track at the Burnaby Velodrome, has a heart for organizing local races, and is dedicated to helping advance women's cycling.

As an added bonus, David is also an owner of Continental Repairs on West 4th, so whether it’s the wheel on your Cervelo, or the tire on your Audi, he can likely help you out. You can read his bike and car musings here: http://continentalrepairs.com/?page_id=413

Jennifer Gerth

In 2003, Jen bought her first road bike, a used steel Bianchi, as a way to train for triathlon. She joined a cycling club as a way to train and started racing the local criteriums, which she found thrilling. Since then, she has acquired a bike for and raced every cycling discipline, but she enjoys road and track the most. Races that are short and fast are great for spectators and competitors alike. This year she is racing for Continental Crit Nasty, and she'll be at all the local criterium and track races, so be sure to say hi.

Some of Jen's notable results include:

  • 2015 Spring Series C women's omnium 1st
  • 2015 Spring Series women's criterium 2nd
  • 2015 Tour de Bloom criterium 3rd
  • 2015 Spring Series C open Murchie road race 5th
  • 2014/2015 Feature Friday omnium: 2nd
  • 2014 Prince Tomohito Grand Prix UCI level 3 track race 2nd in Individual pursuit, 4th in omnium
  • 2014 Japan Track Cup II UCI level 1 track race 11th in omnium
  • 2013 Pitt Polder Time Trial 3rd
  • 2012 WTNC 2nd overall
